Citadines
is a modern housing complex for Aurovilians. People that live there have a
common eatery, along their individual kitchen. Being Citadines a three stories
building, it is possible for us to experiment with long-life creepers, such as
flowers and passion fruit, along the stairs going to the roof. On the first
floor of one of these two buildings, some forty salad plants have already been
planted. A passion fruit has been planted on the ground of the other building,
which is creeping up and is meant to cover the stair-rails so that people will
be able to pluck the fruit right outside their door.
The
most valuable element that Citadines can add to the urban farming project is
the roof-tops. They have already some infrastructure in place for sourcing
water, although we are still addressing issues related to soil and aesthetics.
We plan to have either raised beds, recycled containers and/or structures for
creepers, in order to start some production while providing some shaded area
for recreational purposes. Citadines already recycles its waste water, hence we
are planning to only use recycled water for this area, in order to minimize their
ecological foot-print.
Citadines
can really become a model roof-top and modern habitat due to its modernity, high
population and status within Auroville, and we are very grateful that they
offered this space to us.
